Do High School Memories Make You Shudder?

Mackenzie High School
Mackenzie High School Detroit

When asked what my favorite school memory was I shuddered.  Favorite.  School.  Memory.  I couldn't think of one.

I did well in school with excellent grades but school is as much about socializing as it is about academics.  Socially, I was an outcast and had few friends.  I grew up in a legalistic home where anything fun was not allowed.  I loved my parents dearly and did not rebel but I realized that they were imposing their convictions on me and I felt that wasn't fair.

Girls Basketball

The best way to sum it up is to relay a vivid memory with you.  It was gym class.  First of all I hated gym.  I have never been nor do I want to be athletic except for basketball.  I was our team's star player and the memories on that court make me smile - especially the free throws.  I could do them backwards and still make the basket. But it was only a small portion of the whole school picture and the negative memories certainly outweighed the positive ones.

When You Hear a Song, What Memories Come to Your Mind?

How often do you hear a song that triggers a memory of something from your past? Sometimes the memory may be good and sometimes not so good.  You may remember your first kiss or your first heartbreak   But every time you hear the song, you think of the person you were with that made it special or...not so much.

I love Rock 'n Roll.  I love Black Gospel.  I love the Blues.  Most other music I can do without, but that's just me.  We are all different just as the music with memory triggers are unique to us.   I grew up in Mo Town U S A - Detroit, Michigan.  Need I say more?

Growing up in the fifties with strict parents, I was not allowed to listen to the trending music.  I bought a transistor radio for $1 and would hide in my clothes closet and listen to the songs with the radio next to my ear.  Listening to Chubby Checker and doing the Twist was not an easy feat in my closet.

After graduation, I loved the Sonny and Cher show.  The guy I was dating called me "Babe." The show is long gone, but the memory is triggered when I hear:

The Good, The Bad, The Funny, The Sad

Many of you will agree with me and wonder what happened to January.  Wasn't it just Christmas?  This is our monthly Fly On The Wall post where bloggers share their goings-on in their homes over the past month -- the Good, the Bad and sometimes the Ugly!  Along with the Funny and the Sad.

In the past three months we have lost three dogs.  Two of them were my daughters, Dakota and Willow, and then we lost our 18 year old Texas, the sunshine of my hubby's life.
For that tear-jerking yet heart-warming story click here.

Most of you will remember the posts I have written about Mercedez, my black Lab.  After Texas died, I wondered if Mercedez would make it through another month.  She has grieved deeply with each buddy she lost.  Although she is in good health, with a beautiful shiny coat, she is definitely slowing down -- especially this past month.

Can Dogs Have Dementia?

Do you know if dogs can get dementia?  Sometimes in the middle of the night I will find her standing in the hallway staring at the walls.  It is like she does not know where she is or why.
