What Kind of Friend Are You?

I wrote this to a special friend on her birthday yesterday. It occurred to me that some of you may have a friend like this and want to share it with them as well.

Thank God for friends of all types, sizes, and colors. I’ve had big friends and little friends (some of them have four legs), old friends and young friends, and fair-weather friends who are only there for the ride.

Some of my friends have been there for decades. Some are online friends who I may never meet in person but are friends, none the less.

Some people call me a friend but it is a one-way relationship. I am there for them but not so much the other way around.
Some friends I feel comfortable with all the time. These are the friends who do not pass judgment no matter what I do or how badly I mess up. Others look at me differently when I have disappointed them.

Some friends offer advice and others are there only to receive it.
Some friends I argue with and then laugh about it. Others might take offense and the relationship is never the same.
Some friends hear my story and wonder how I made it through such pain. Others understand me well enough and use that knowledge to encourage me when the chips are down.
Some friends I laugh with – others I cry with but the ones I both laugh and cry with are especially dear to me.

Some friends are more acquaintances than friends – especially in the business world, but they are friends – because they care.
Some friends have a no-subjects-barred policy and others I may have to walk on eggshells carefully not to offend.
Some of my friends love God with all their being while others don’t believe in Him at all.
Some respect me and others wonder about me and don’t understand.

I have lost friends and found them again – picking up where we left off.
I have lost friends and sadly, will never see them again while left wondering why. There was no closure.
Some call for no reason at all – others need or want something. Some call to see how my day is going and some call to tell me about their day.
All of us have a variety of friends. Some we get closer to every time we chat with them. Others may begin to withdraw from me or vice-versa.
In the dictionary, under the word friend, there is a picture of you. I have never had a friend like you and I am sure I never will have another. You are more special to me than I ever imagined I deserved in a friend. I wish I had words to describe how much you mean to me and hope you know exactly which of the above description of friend.....you are.

  2. A wonderful overview of what friendship means. We often forget "Friend" isn't a one-size-fits-all label. (Is anything ever really "one size fits all"?)
